Hockaday Alum Named Rhodes Scholar
Congratulations to Hockaday and Lamplighter alum Laura Roberts, who has been named one of 32 Rhodes scholars for 2015.
The senior at Duke University will head to the University of Oxford in England next fall on a full scholarship. She was chosen from a pool of 869 Rhodes applicants from more than 300 schools.
Roberts is majoring in history, with a focus on women’s rights, gender, and religion in the early modern period. At Oxford, she plans to pursue a master’s of philosophy in British and European history, and eventually study toward a law degree.
She has worked with refugees in Durham, N.C.; the Rwanda Girls Initiative; and the civil-liberties watchdog group Freedom House, based in Washington, D.C. She also has held leadership positions with the Duke International Relations Association, Duke Human Rights Center Advisory Board, Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society, Order of Omega Honor Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and Church World Services.
Roberts graduated from Lamplighter in 2004 and from Hockaday in 2012. She is the first Hockaday alum to be chosen as a Rhodes scholar since Libby Longino in 2006.
