Young Wins Game 1 for Royals
Those who went to bed before midnight may have missed it, but former Highland Park standout Chris Young was the winning pitcher in his first World Series appearance on Tuesday night.
Young pitched the final three innings without allowing a run as the Kansas City Royals outlasted the New York Mets 5-4 in 14 innings in the series opener.
Young, 36, has made three playoff appearances for the Royals this season, all in Kansas City victories. He is still expected to start Game 4 for the Royals on Saturday.
The 6-foot-10 right-hander picked up just the second postseason win of his career and his first since 2006, when he was with the San Diego Padres. His outing lowered his career postseason earned-run average to an excellent 1.47, with 24 strikeouts in 18.2 innings.
