To raise awareness of the dangers of substance abuse, the Highland Park High School student council rallied together to get four iconic downtown buildings to aid in their goal of painting the town purple.

During the Scots football game against Mesquite on Oct. 23, Reunion Tower, the Bank of America Tower, the Omni Hotel, and One Arts Plaza will light up the Dallas skyline in purple. During the game, football players on both sides will wear Project Purple decals on their helmets.

The event, which is a part of the Red Ribbon week festivities, is a part of  the Herren Project Purple initiative. The students were inspired by last year’s Red Ribbon Week speaker, former NBA player Chris Herren, whose experiences inspired the launch of the Herren Project.

To share the message to “go purple,” the student council posted a video to share the school’s participation.

So if you’re not at Highlander Stadium on Oct. 23 for some reason and you drive by downtown, be on the lookout for purple lights and know it’s thanks to HPHS.
