I was proud to have been a colleague for so many years of Philip Wuntch, the longtime film critic at The Dallas Morning News, and his kind and loving wife, Mimi. So I was saddened to hear of his passing on Monday at age 70, following a lengthy illness and hospital stay.

There’s an obituary in the DMN today that pays tribute to Philip, who retired in 2006, and also provides the details on his upbringing in the Park Cities. He started writing film reviews as a student at Highland Park High School and at SMU, and became a mainstay of the Dallas film scene for more than a generation.

So in offering condolences to Mimi, I encourage everyone to seek out Philip’s old reviews and appreciate his love for film, and his influence on fellow writers and moviegoers that continues to this day. He will be missed.
