Skulduggery of the week: Pill-Popping Purloiner
Between 12:17 and 12:37 p.m. on Oct. 4, a thief stole $29,450 worth of prescription pain medication during an open house in the 4200 block of Potomac Avenue. The perpetrator immediately went upstairs to the master bathroom when he came into the house, and nobody followed him. The larcenist signed in using a fake name, and his strange behavior indicated to realtors that he “seemed to be on drugs.” His pockets were stuffed with pill bottles as he fled. A realtor discreetly snapped a photo but didn’t get his vehicle information before he got away.

30 WEDNESDAY
Between 12:15 and 12:35 p.m., a burglar broke into a cabinet inside an open garage in the 3100 block of Mockingbird Laneand stole $200 worth of tools. The homeowner was gardening in the yard during the incident, and discovered a cup of ice from Williams Chicken near the cabinet, followed by a white Chevrolet pickup leaving the area.
2 FRIDAY
Between 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 30 and 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 2, a thief entered an unlocked white 2001 Ford F-250 pickup in the 4500 block of Abbott Avenue and caused $1,000 worth of damage to the ignition, but nothing was stolen.
At 1:28 a.m., Jason Frank Pendergrass, 37, of Dallas was arrested in the 4100 block of Lomo Alto Drive on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia along with multiple warrants.
At 2:51 a.m., Daniel Garvey Loftus, 21, of Dallas was arrested in the 3500 block of St. Johns Drive on a public intoxication charge.
4 SUNDAY
At 4 p.m., an employee at Whole Foods Market in the 4100 block of Lomo Alto Drive reported seeing an unkempt man in the passenger seat of her blue 1993 Toyota 4Runner, which might have been unlocked. The intruder was carrying a rock, and when confronted, he relayed a fictitious story about the car owner’s family owing money. Eventually, he was coaxed out of the vehicle and fled on foot. Although the miscreant didn’t steal anything from the 4Runner, he did take a wallet containing $400 in cash from a Whole Foods customer who was drinking wine and reading a magazine at an outdoor table. He was later spotted in a red Volvo on Oak Lawn Avenue, but wasn’t caught.

Between 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 28 and 7:50 a.m. on Sept. 29, a thief stole a black 2008 Lexus sedan, valued at $30,000, from a driveway in the 4100 block of Purdue Street.
Between 4:15 and 5 p.m., a burglar broke into a black 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee at Curtis Park and stole a $250 purse and $180 worth of jewelry.
Between 5:30 and 6 p.m., a burglar broke into a silver 2012 Infiniti sedan at Germany Park and stole a $475 Tory Burch purse containing $10 in cash.
30 WEDNESDAY
Between 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 29 and 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 30, a burglar broke into a black 2010 Cadillac Escalade in the 3900 block of Glenwick Lane and stole the third-row seat. During the same time frame, a crook stole the third-row seat from a silver 2009 GMC Yukon in the 3400 block of Hanover Street.
At 2:02 p.m., a pickpocket stole a $200 cell phone from an employee inside CVS at Park Cities Plaza and fled on foot.
1 THURSDAY
Between 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 30 and 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 1, a burglar broke into a black 2011 GMC Yukon in the 4100 block of Grassmere Lane in an attempt to steal the third-row seat, but an anti-theft device thwarted that effort.
Between 6:15 and 7:15 p.m., a burglar broke into a white 2014 Subaru SUV at Park Cities Plaza and stole a $50 wallet containing $450 in cash. The wallet was later recovered, but the money was not.
3 SATURDAY
Between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., a thief stole a $750 Kona boys bicycle in the 4000 block of Villanova Drive.
At 10:05 p.m., William Brooks Roberts, 18, of University Park was arrested in the 3100 block of Southwestern Boulevard on charges of consumption of alcohol by a minor and evading arrest.
And why would someone have more than $29,000 in pain meds at their house??
