A domestic disturbance involving a man barricaded inside a house led to a standoff with Highland Park police that lasted almost five hours on Sunday. There were no injuries.
It began at 5:45 p.m., when a woman called 911 from the 4800 block of Abbott Avenue. She left the house unharmed, but when Highland Park Department of Public Safety officers arrived, the woman’s husband refused to come out.
“We made repeated attempts to make contact with the individual inside,” said HPDPS Lt. Lance Koppa. “We assumed that there were weapons inside the house.”
William Thomas Henson, 68, was arrested without further incident at 10:17 p.m. and was transported to a hospital for evaluation.
Officers confiscated multiple weapons from inside the house, including two Ruger revolvers and a Beretta 9mm handgun, along with various types of ammunition.
During the standoff, which involved SWAT officers, police closed off Abbott to vehicle and pedestrian traffic between Euclid and Harvard. A portion of the Katy Trail also was barricaded for precautionary reasons.
