Rangers Renew Lopsided Rivalry With Strake
Which is the real Jesuit defense? Is it the one that shut out Arlington Bowie and allowed just 111 total yards in the season opener, or the unit that surrendered 57 points and 578 yards last week to Plano East?
Perhaps the answer will come tonight, when the Rangers wrap up their nondistrict schedule by hosting Catholic rival Strake Jesuit, a team it has dominated in recent years.
Jesuit has won all five meetings since 2010, and most of those have been in lopsided fashion, including a 59-35 victory last season in Houston.
The Rangers (1-1) will try to gain momentum before a bye week followed by the District 9-6A opener on Sept. 24 against Sunset.
After setting a school record for points last season, Jesuit has continued rolling on offense this year. Dual-threat quarterback Jacob Palisch has been efficient both through the air and on the ground, Adam Holtz has provided some tough rushing yards, and Connor Lanpher has emerged as a go-to receiver.
The Crusaders (1-1), who haven’t posted a winning record or made the playoffs since 2008, opened the season with a 70-23 win over Aldine before falling to Houston St. Thomas 42-35 last week. Returning quarterback Zach Zubia leads the Strake Jesuit offense.
