Lions, Eagles Renew Rivalry Tonight
Next to the SPC championship game, the most important victory for ESD last season might have come against rival St. Mark’s.
After all, it had been more than a decade since the Eagles had beaten the Lions, and last year’s 34-14 thumping set the tone for one of the most memorable seasons in school history.
Fast-forward to Friday, when the teams will square off again, this time at St. Mark’s, in a game that might not have implications in the SPC standings, but carries plenty of significance.
ESD opened its season with a 53-14 win over Houston Second Baptist on Aug. 29 at the Brook Hill Classic in Bullard. Nakeie Montgomery scored four touchdowns for the Eagles, including one rushing, two receiving, and one on a punt return.
Connor Bolton added three rushing touchdowns, and the ESD defense intercepted three passes in a game that showed the Eagles might just be picking up where they left off in 2014.
The Lions opened the season with a thrilling 34-33 win over Cistercian, as St. Mark’s rallied from a 13-point deficit in the final five minutes. William Caldwell caught two scoring passes from Matthew Placide, including a 17-yarder with 1:41 remaining to put the Lions in front.
The game will begin a stretch of four home games in the next five weeks for St. Mark’s, which is trying to return to the SPC playoffs after a semifinal loss a year ago.
