Can the Lady Scots Bring Home a State Title?
Highland Park has played on this same field before, but the Lady Scots haven’t quite been in this same situation.
HP is back in the state tournament in girls soccer, something it accomplished during a state-title run in 2012 and with a runner-up finish the next spring. But those were in Class 4A.
What makes this year’s accomplishment more noteworthy is that it caps the Lady Scots’ first season in Class 6A, the highest enrollment classification in the state. They will face Katy Cinco Ranch at noon today in the state semifinals in Georgetown.
The Lady Scots (24-0-2) are unbeaten on the season, but they’ve also rolled through the playoffs, having outscored its five opponents by a combined 18-0. That includes a 2-0 win over Austin Westlake and a 3-0 win over Pflugerville Hendrickson (behind a hat trick from Kate Summers) at the Region II tournament last weekend.
The Lady Cougars (23-2) likewise are unblemished in postseason play, with five shutouts including a 3-0 victory over Katy Seven Lakes in the Region III final on April 11. Cinco Ranch, which lost in the 5A state semifinals last year, claimed the District 19-6A title during the regular season and has an 18-game winning streak.
HP, of course, has won five state championships previously, including unclassified crowns in 1994 and 1996, and 4A trophies in 2000, 2002, and 2012.
The winner of today’s game will face undefeated Coppell, which defeated San Antonio Reagan 1-0 earlier Friday, for the state title at 4 p.m. Saturday.
By the way, all state tournament games can be streamed live online via the UIL website.
