Will Green Jacket Fit Jordan Spieth?
Is Jordan Spieth the best golfer in the world right now?
That’s a question I posed to someone earlier this week, prior to the start of The Masters, during which the former Jesuit standout and Preston Hollow native is poised to make my hypothesis look ingenious.
Spieth, 21, is 14-under par through two rounds, the lowest score at the midway point in the history of the prestigious tournament. On Thursday, his opening round of 64 was one off the course record and was the lowest opening round at The Masters in almost two decades. He followed that up with a round of 66 this morning.
So as Spieth takes a huge lead into the weekend, his first major victory might depend more on handling his own nerves than fending off his challengers.
But back to the original question. Spieth was a favorite of many entering The Masters, where he finished second a year ago, in large part because of his stellar form so far this year.
He has won twice on the PGA Tour since November and was the runner-up in his two most recent outings in San Antonio and Houston. Three other times he placed in the top 10, boosting him to fourth in the World Golf Rankings.
So Spieth enters the final two rounds hoping to make amends for last year, when he held the lead in the final round only to falter down the stretch. This time, given his age, maybe he can celebrate with some champagne.
