North Mesquite Is Familiar Foe For HP
As it continues its march through the Class 6A playoffs, Highland Park will face a familiar foe tonight.
The undefeated Lady Scots will meet District 10-6A rival North Mesquite for the third time this season, with the stakes raised considerably in the Region II quarterfinal matchup.
The game is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Lake Highlands, the same site where HP defeated Skyline and Rockwall by identical 4-0 scores in its first two postseason triumphs. Kate Summers scored two goals against the Lady Jackets on Friday, while Ginny Hoy posted the shutout in goal.
The Lady Stallions (14-6-2) finished in fourth place in 10-6A during the regular season, but have been rolling recently, with five straight wins entering Tuesday. That streak includes playoff upsets of Carrollton R.L. Turner and Rowlett.
The Lady Scots (21-0-2) experienced North Mesquite’s improvement firsthand on Feb. 20, when HP won a shootout following a 2-2 tie. That marked a significant change from the district opener, when the Lady Scots earned a 6-1 victory on Jan. 27.
That Feb. 20 game seemed to spark HP as well, however, as the Lady Scots have scored 39 goals in nine games since, winning by at least two goals each time.
The winner of tonight’s game will advance to the Region II semifinals on Friday in Round Rock, where it will play either Round Rock Cedar Ridge or Austin Westlake.
At any rate, both teams come from a district that has proven its strength in the playoffs, with three teams remaining among the eight quarterfinalists. Lake Highlands will play Sachse tonight after upsetting Waco Midway in the area round.
