Condo Project Lets Residents Design Space
Who wants to create their own condo? There’s a project coming soon to Lomo Alto Drive that will let prospective Highland Park dwellers do just that.
The plan for the single-building complex, called Lomo Alto Residences, will be to shell out 30,000 square feet over three floors, then finish out spaces to the size and specifications of the buyer’s choosing.
The result will likely have between six and eight luxury flats on a half-acre site at the intersection of Lomo Alto and Fairway Avenue, but until all the space is bought, the exact number is unclear.
“They can finish it out any way they want to,” said John Gourley, vice president of development group Madison Lomo Alto Condo L.P. “I like the idea of people being able to devise their own floor plan.”
So do potential residents, who have already expressed interest even though construction hasn’t started yet. Gourley said the hope is to have the first move-in during the spring of 2016.
The units will be between 2,700 and 4,000 square feet, with a 16-car underground parking garage and plenty of green space,” he said. The stucco-and-limestone exterior will include arched front windows and patios with iron railings and wood-burning fireplaces.
One of the developers is Joan Germany, who once owned a set of 13 apartments at the same site, then sold them and later repurchased the land after that complex was razed. Germany’s grandfather, Eugene, was mayor of Highland Park during the 1930s, and her father, Wilson, was mayor of University Park during the 1970s and has a city park named after him.
The architect is Phillip Shepherd, who also designed the Mansion on Turtle Creek and the Crescent.
“It will be the highest end in town,” Gourley said. “It’s very unique for everybody.”
