SMU Relay for Life Team Earns Top Spot
SMU earned another number one ranking in February.
Based on 2014 fundraising totals, the SMU Relay for Life team placed in the top 25 college Relay for Life teams and competed to collectively raise $250,000 during a three-day online event.
SMU topped the other teams with a donation of $45,534, which helped the 25 teams raise $315,654 altogether. “The SMU community rose to new heights with the unbelievable success they had during the Number One Relay Challenge,” said Rebecca Wood, staff partner for the Relay for Life. “I am so proud of the student-led committee and the community as a whole.”
For SMU student and ovarian cancer survivor Katie Ballard, Relay for Life is an especially important cause. “Relay for life means so much to me! Not only does it raise money and awareness, but it does so in a fun way that includes the entire campus and Dallas community,” she said.
Ballard said her favorite memory from the event was only a year ago when her family and her surgeon came out to support her. “We all walked the survivors loop together and it was a special moment that I will never forget.”
SMU’s Relay for Life event is scheduled for April 10 at 6 p.m. on the SMU campus. The relay consists of individuals and teams taking turns walking or running around a route on campus, as well as other fun activities. There’s still time to sign up, volunteer, and donate. Just visit their website to get started, and see you on April 10.
