Bo Knows the Way to Walker Middle School
Hopefully kids today still know the name Bo Jackson — one of the greatest all-around athletes of his generation who found success both as a running back in the NFL and a slugger in Major League Baseball during the 1980s and 1990s.
While students at Walker Middle School are too young to have seen Jackson in his prime, they received some words of wisdom from the Heisman Trophy winner when he visited the school on Friday, in advance of his receiving the Doak Walker Legends Award later that evening.
Jackson, 52, spoke at an assembly for athletes from Walker and neighboring W.T. White High School along with University of Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon, this year’s Doak Walker Award recipient.
Jackson told the students: “My education took me 10 times further than my football talents.”
Gordon said: “It took me until my sophomore year of high school to realize just doing enough won’t get you where you need to be.”
Doak Walker, of course, is a former SMU standout and Heisman winner whose father, Ewell, is the namesake for Walker Middle School. Ewell Walker was a teacher and assistant superintendent for Dallas ISD.
