Lady Scots Look to Tame Lady Tigers in Playoffs

With one goal accomplished on its checklist for the first season in Class 6A, Highland Park will enter the playoffs tonight looking to make a bigger splash.

The Lady Scots (19-10) will meet Irving (14-15) in a Region II bi-district matchup at 7 p.m. at Grand Prairie High School, looking for their first postseason victory since 2012.

HP finished as the runner-up in District 10-6A during the regular season in its first campaign under head coach Nicole Villarreal, who took over the Lady Scots after a successful stint as an assistant at Duncanville.

The Lady Scots improved throughout the season as they adjusted to a new up-tempo approach, and used a balanced attack to surpass the 50-point mark in eight of their final nine regular-season games.

Meanwhile, the Lady Tigers are returning to postseason play for the first time since 2008 behind new coach Katrina Robinson. They were third in District 9-6A behind powerhouses Skyline and Irving MacArthur, and they enter the playoffs on a four-game winning streak. Irving is led by the combination of forward Kristal Okeke and guard Erin Sanchez.

If it means anything, HP has the advantage when examining three common nondistrict opponents — McKinney, Sachse, and Wylie East. The Lady Scots defeated Wylie East and lost to the other two, but by considerably smaller margins than the Lady Tigers.

At any rate, the winner of tonight’s game will advance to play either Rockwall or Killeen Ellison in the area round later this week.
