The accomplishments of two computer science standouts at Ursuline Academy are being recognized at local and national levels.

Jacqueline Gibson and Angela Montemayor received the DFW Region NCWIT (National Center for Women and Information Technology) Aspiration in Computing Award for their passion in technology. The girls also received national runner-up level recognition among 350 other students.

Montemayor, a junior who hails from a family of computer scientists, credited her passion for computers to her genes and an AP computer science class she took during the previous year.

Gibson, a senior, was one of 60 students at the First Bytes Computer Science Camp held in the summer at The University of Texas at Austin. She also was an information technology intern for an energy company. She plans to study computer science in college, and has hopes of working as a security analyst for a government agency.

Gibson said she’s delighted to be recognized by NCWIT. “Organizations like NCWIT help ensure that other girls have an opportunity to experience that ‘Aha moment,’ and I am proud to be associated with them and their work.

The girls will be recognized alongside the other DFW regional winners at the Metroplex Technology Business Council luncheon on Feb. 20.
