Free Luncheon to Focus on Teen Addiction
An upcoming luncheon will shine a spotlight on an important topic — the plight of teenage girls who are addicted to drugs or alcohol, or suffering from trauma related to physical or sexual abuse, incarceration, homelessness, or abandonment.
Nexus Recovery Center will hold its second annual Women’s Forum on Teen Female Addiction at noon Friday at the Communities Foundation of Texas Mabel Peters Caruth Center, near the intersection of North Central Expressway and Caruth Haven Lane.
This year’s topic is “The Addicted Teen: Brain Disease and Implications for Families,” and the featured speaker will be Dr. David Atkinson, an adolescent addiction specialist who completed his fellowship at the renowned Mayo Clinic.
The event chairman is Becky Frey, with sponsors including AT&T, Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s, and CoHost Catering. The luncheon is free and open to the public. For registration information, email Abi Erickson at aerickson@nexusrecovery.org.
Sadly, the PC parents and girls who need to hear this information most are least likely to attend this luncheon. The girls who have been in ISS for drinking at dances, the girls who puke and cry their guts our every weekend, the ones who are team captains and dancers who get caught drinking and still never lose their positions (despite the rules) and the girls who drink because they are depressed or lonely or hurting . . .those girls will not show up there and neither will their parents. Shame.
