Speedflex to Mix Fitness and Fundraising
Burn calories and raise money at the same time? What’s not to love, then, about the inaugural “Speedflex-a-thon” slated for Saturday at the new Speedflex location in Preston Center — well, except perhaps the name.
Here’s the deal: There will be 16 teams with 10 members each, working out for 30-minute sessions over a 12-hour period — from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. — to burn a collective 75,000 calories, as monitored by the Polar Team Pro system and displayed throughout the center.
For motivational purposes, a handful of local celebrity captains also will be on hand, including former Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco, sportscaster Dale Hansen, health and fitness guru Larry North, former Texas Rangers pitcher Kenny Rogers, news reporter Calvert Collins, and football legend Roger Staubach.
The event will benefit Best Buddies Texas, a nonprofit that works to establish opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and already has raised $75,000 through event sponsors toward that cause. More money will be pledged through donations matching dollar amounts with burned calories.
