HP Authorizes New Water Restrictions

At Monday’s Highland Park Town Council meeting, council members approved changes to the town’s “drought contingency” plan, mainly because the majority of the state is under extreme drought, and Highland Park is under “Drought Emergency Response Stage 1.” The changes noted below will take effect Sept. 1.

HP procures its water from the Dallas County Park Cities Municipal Utilities District (or DCPCMUD – whew, still with me?), which is entirely sourced by Grapevine Lake. With conditions as they are now, that means there’s a limited volume.

So what does this mean for you?

  • Even-numbered houses water on Sundays and Thursdays
  • Odd-numbered houses water on Saturdays and Wednesdays
  • Non-residential customers (apartments, businesses, etc.) water on Tuesdays and Fridays
  • No watering will take place on Mondays

Additionally, this new ordinance prohibits:

  • Over-seeding with cool-season grasses
  • “Hydro-mulching” (minus new construction or erosion control)
  • Watering that causes runoff away from the lot

Of course, there are exceptions. Those include circumstances such as public-safety areas, newly-planted trees, irrigation systems, and other properties authorized by the town. Check out all the  exceptions and regulations here.

Until people change their watering behavior(s), and Texas gets a real plan for our water supply problems because of enormous new demand, say hello to stages 2, 3, and 4. As far as Highland Park, Tx…..there a some of us who have done a great job with respect to water usage…….and there are the others who need serious water counseling. And I mean some serious talking to.

It is like many other things in life…..the responsible people get thrown in with the “I don’t have a care in the worlders,” and we all have to suffer the end consequences.

    All the Best,
