Michael Young insists that his family’s involvement in the Knights and Princesses Dream Ball benefit for the Dallas Children’s Theater is a family affair.

That was one caveat insisted upon by the Preston Hollow resident and former Texas Rangers standout — that if he was going to be an honorary chair of the fundraiser, that his wife and children could share in the recognition as well.

So Young is chairing the Sept. 20 benefit — for which proceeds will fund adapted performances for children with special needs — along with his wife, Cristina Barbosa, and their children, Mateo, Emilio, and Antonio.

“Our family is pleased to serve as honorary chairs of the Knights and Princesses Dream Ball at Dallas Children’s Theater,” Barbosa said in a statement issued by the family. “Having seen firsthand the benefits that theater has provided our own children, we are excited to be a part of raising funds for adapted performances for children with special needs. After all, every child deserves great live theater! We hope everyone will join us in bringing the magic of live theater to all children.”

This year, DCT presented its first sensory-friendly production for children with special needs. The theater adapted the performance by reducing sound levels, eliminating flashing lights, and keeping the overall house lights up a few levels higher than for a standard performance.

The ball is set for 6 p.m. in the Rosewood Center at DCT, after a season-opening performance of Rapunzel! Rapunzel! A Very Hairy Fairy Tale.  Tickets are $50 per person for the ball (and separate for the performance). Call 214-740-0051 for more information.
