Lamplighter students celebrate their donation of thousands of books.

Lamplighter Parents’ Association (LPA) and representatives from the school, in partnership with the Commit! organization, delivered 4,000 books to students at Sudie Williams and Walnut Hill Elementary Schools on May 29. The books filled the Lamplighter School’s truck along with three large SUVs and were donated by Lamplighter families during a book drive last month.

The donation is part of the effort to build the DISD classroom libraries and build reading scores. During the past school year, DISD students practiced reading and writing skills and discussing books as they developed pen pal relationships. The multi-phase initiative includes parent participation through the school’s community outreach committee who designed reading kits for use in tutoring students at the two elementary schools.

Part of Lamplighter’s mission is for the school to be a part of a broader educational community, and is focused on igniting young minds.
