Scots Win Big at State Academic Meet

The HPHS Number Sense team earned first place in Class 4A at the UIL State Academic Meet in Austin.

Two teams and one individual competitor from Highland Park High School made it to the UIL State Academic Meet, which was held at the University of Texas in Austin on May 19-21.

The Number Sense team — William Lake, Eric Murphy, Nathan Kong and Sandra Kong — took home the gold in Class 4A, with coaching by retired HPISD math teacher Charles Tillerson. Nathan and Sandra competed individually, finishing in fourth place and seventh place, respectively.

The Science team — William Lake, Khai-Leif Nguyen-hille, Xiaohan Gao and Jiamin Zhou — finished in second place in 4A. The team is coached by HPHS chemistry teacher Wenzen Chuang. William took fourth place individually and Khai-Leif took fifth.

HPHS Junior David Wiegn, coached by history teacher Cynthia Jones, placed ninth in the Social Studies competition in 4A.
