Scheffler Makes Cut at Byron Nelson
IRVING — Highland Park senior Scottie Scheffler kept his cool and made the cut in his PGA Tour debut on Friday at the HP Byron Nelson Championship.
As an amateur and the youngest player in the field, Scheffler fired a 1-over-par round of 71 on Thursday before starting the second round with a flourish on Friday morning. He sits at 1-under-par entering the weekend.
On Friday, he overcame an errant tee shot on the first hole to make par, then started a string of four birdies in five holes on the par-4 third to creep into top-10 contention. Then he stumbled down the stretch with bogeys caused by missed fairways on holes 10, 15, and 16, before rolling in a long putt for birdie on the par-3 No. 17 earned a hearty round of applause from the gallery.
Scheffler, of course, is less than three weeks removed from winning his third consecutive Class 4A state title for the Scots.
