Indie Film With Local Ties to Screen

540_800_refuge_poster-540x800UPDATE: A screening of Refuge has been scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday (April 6) at the Texas Theatre in Oak Cliff. Read on for the original post.

The new independent film Refuge has plenty of local ties.

One of the producers is Dallas Sonnier, a Highland Park native who launched Hollywood-based Caliber Media with Jack Heller in 2008. The pair has produced several low-budget projects since.

In this case, the company partnered with Lascaux Films, the production company started recently by former Dallas film critic Gary Cogill, who is an executive producer on Refuge, the company’s first theatrical release.

The film, which was acquired for distribution by Strand Releasing, opens on Friday in New York. It marks the directorial debut of Jessica Goldberg, who adapted her stage play of the same name, and stars Krysten Ritter and Brian Geraghty.

Sonnier’s company has several other films in the works, including Warren, Dark Was the Night, and Hot.

Great job, Dallas. “Hollywood or bust” – remember that.
