How Home-Rule Debate Should be Framed

As is done every 10 years, an appointed commission of 16 people is reviewing Dallas’ charter. The group will issue a list of recommended changes this summer, and the city’s voters will give those recommendations a thumbs up or thumbs down in November.

For the first time, a petition drive is trying to create an appointed commission of 15 people to review DISD’s charter. The group would issue a list of recommended changes this summer, and the district’s voters would give those recommendations a thumbs up or thumbs down in November.

The latter situation has people gnashing their teeth and pulling their hair out across the county. The former situation is met with yawns. Are they not as similar as I’m making them out to be?
