Stephen Dieb and Connor Creek saved their best for last at the Class 4A state wrestling tournament on Saturday in Garland.

Both Highland Park wrestlers won state titles in their second trips to state, with Dieb claiming a gold medal in the 145-pound weight class and Creek earning the title at 160 pounds.

Dieb (34-2), a sophomore, topped Jon Hernandez of Amarillo Palo Duro in a 3-1 decision in the title match. Dieb was unbeaten in postseason matches, winning both district and regional titles prior to the state crown.

Creek (34-4), a junior, defeated Lancaster’s Aaron Guery in a tiebreaker in the championship match. Creek was able to avenge a loss to Guery in the Region III final match from two weeks earlier.

Both champions were making repeat trips to the state tournament. A year ago, Dieb finished third at 126 pounds as a freshman. Creek was a state qualifier at 152 pounds but lost both of his matches.

The Scots finished second behind Frisco Centennial in the 4A team standings.
