A police chase that started on a busy Sunday afternoon at Highland Park Village ended with an arrest in Oklahoma last night.

The incident began about 4:20 p.m., when Highland Park Department of Public Safety officers confronted Christopher Scott Burton, 39, outside of Mi Cocina restaurant, where he had been kicked out for his behavior.

Officers told Burton to exit his white 3/4-ton Dodge pickup to be interviewed, but he refused. Instead, Burton fled the scene, intentionally striking an officer with the door frame of his truck. The officer was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

A witness reported officers drew their guns as Burton’s truck hit an unoccupied SUV in the parking lot as well as other cars and a tree, then left the shopping center.

The ensuing chase reached northbound North Central Expressway, when Burton began driving erratically to elude authorities. HPDPS decided to discontinue the chase near Walnut Hill Lane for public safety reasons.

HPDPS dispatch entered the truck as a vehicle wanted for a felony. He was clocked at 110 mph in Grayson County before crossing the state line.

Later, his tire went flat but he continued to drive on the rims, sparking several grass fires along U.S. Highway 75 in southern Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol eventually arrested Burton in Atoka County after deploying tire-deflating stop sticks, which Burton tried to avoid before swerving into a ditch. He was tazed by officers after trying to confront them while yelling incoherently. He is being held in the Atoka County Jail.

Burton faces a slew of charges in both states. His local charges include aggravated assault on a public servant, felony failure to leave identification, evading arrest, and terroristic threat on a public servant.

The OHP charges include reckless driving, failure to stop for a road block, use of drug paraphernalia, and resisting arrest. More charges are pending from other jurisdictions along U.S. Highway 75.

He was either carrying drugs, had a warrant, or Meth’d off his arse. What idiot would trade “public intoxicated “for prison time in two states!

Just curious why both of you said he must be on meth…what signs point to that?

All the symptoms are there. If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, I’d say it was a duck.

A grateful thank you to the Highland Park DPS officers and other Texas law enforcement involved. I’m glad to hear that our officers were not seriously hurt.

I’m extremely grateful that the officers involved were not seriously injured, and that the incident ended without the loss of life.@scooter and @sallyjomama. If you read the Oklahoma reports, you will see that the Oklahoma deputies used a taser which can lead to the look in the picture. In addition, meth and drugs are not the only reasons people behave irrationally. There is, also, mental illness. That is the case in this situation. I would be very careful about throwing around information on these message boards without the basis of knowledge and using assumptions from books you’ve read and pictures you look at online. This is a horrific tragedy, and my prayers are with the officers and police departments involved as well as this man’s family. They have a long road ahead of them. My hope is that he receives the medical help that he so desperately needs. Mental illness is not a joke, and frankly, neither is addiction.
