Lady Scots Bounce Back With Big Win
Highland Park needed a win in the worst way to close out the first half of the District 10-4A girls basketball schedule, and Terrell provided the perfect remedy.
The Lady Scots quadrupled the score of the winless Lady Tigers in a 76-19 win on Friday that snapped a three-game losing streak for HP.
“It’s a confidence booster,” said HP head coach Amy Matlock. “It was a good game for us to focus on fundamentals and some of the little things.”
Matlock said that while she wasn’t necessarily disappointed in the way the Lady Scots (13-6, 4-3) played during a stretch of losses to West Mesquite, Carrollton Newman Smith, and Carrollton Creekview, they needed a victory to keep pace with the district’s other playoff contenders.
HP is now tied with Creekview and Mesquite Poteet for third place in the league standings entering the second half of the schedule, which starts on Tuesday against Forney.
On Friday, the Lady Scots rolled to a 45-17 lead at halftime, then scored the first 27 points of the second half. Terrell had just two points after the break.
Twelve players scored for the Lady Scots, led by Katie Thiebaud with 16 points and Caroline Roberts with 12.
The 57-point margin of victory is the third largest of the season for HP, which defeated Gateway Charter by 65 points and W.T. White by 61 points during nondistrict play.
In boys action on Friday, Highland Park pulled away from Terrell in the second half for a 77-38 road win that allowed the Scots (19-3, 5-0) to remain unbeaten in 10-4A play.
