Highland Park won a showdown with Carrollton Newman Smith on Tuesday to take command of the District 10-4A boys basketball standings.

The Scots assumed control early with a 23-7 run to open the game, and held on for a 73-60 victory to remain unbeaten in district play.

It was the third consecutive win for the Scots (18-3, 4-0) over the Trojans (9-5, 3-1), who won the league crown last season despite being swept by HP.

Evan Beucler scored 22 points to pace the Scots, followed by Derek Cahn 18 with points and Matthew Crites with 13. Cahn and Clayton Murtha added eight rebounds apiece.

HP, which moved up to No. 8 in the most recent Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 4A state poll, will continue district play on Friday at winless Terrell.

Also on Tuesday, the HP girls dropped their third consecutive game with a 52-38 loss at Newman Smith. Hannah Reynolds paced the Lady Scots (12-6, 3-3) with 14 points.

HP will wrap up the first half of the 10-4A schedule on Friday when it hosts Terrell.
