Scots Radio Team Had Dramatic Offseason
I know that some radio station must be broadcasting the Scots’ football games this season, because I saw a sideline reporter putting a microphone in head coach Randy Allen’s face just before halftime tonight. But that station is not 1190 AM, as it has been for several seasons. Given that I had my 4-year-old son with me, we left Eagle Stadium during halftime. When I tuned the radio to 1190, the station was playing country music.
So when I got home, I got on the web and started searching for “highland park scots radio” and “highland park football radio.” I found nothing that told me what station I should turn on, but I did find something very interesting on the website of Archer Communications. This blog post went up on Aug. 14:
A handshake is worthless today
I admit it, I’m very old school. I was brought up in west Texas, where a handshake was a solid contract, and I’ve always tried to conduct my life that way. I have always believed that if you treat people with respect, they will return the same. I was sadly mistaken. Archer Communications will not be broadcasting Highland Park high school football this fall. It seems that I was blindsided by a member of my crew, who unexpectedly resigned in March “to pursue other interests”. As it turned out, those interests were stealing the broadcasts away from our company, and putting some of my crew out of work. I still don’t understand his logic. The crew was the best paid high school crew in the area, and had everything and anything they needed. I made sure that each broadcast was critiqued so that we could improve every week (and I hate critiques as much as the next person, so I made sure they were positive in nature). But this crew member was not satisfied, and decided that he could do a better job. The Highland Park people were part of this ruse too. Each year, I meet with the incoming captains dads to set up the season, and give them the assistance they need to market the broadcasts. I had my meeting, and at no time did they say anything about any plans to move the broadcasts away from my company. I discovered later that my former crew member had already made arrangements to steal the property, and had encouraged the dads to get as much information from me. They called me 3 weeks later (the last weekend of May) to tell me the news, that they would no longer need my services, that they were going to go another direction. They were not concerned that I had been working on the upcoming season since the close of the last season, nor were they concerned that I had already spent money in preparation. I was told that people from Highland Park could not be trusted, and I didn’t believe them. Turns out I was wrong. So this fall, Archer Communications will not be in a football stadium. We will not be calling the action of any team. We tried to find a compatible school for the radio signal we had, but the lack of time to make the arrangements made it impossible.
When I came across that post, it had zero comments. Something tells me the post you’re reading now will have more. (At the very least, I need some commenter to tell me which station the Scots are on.)
100.7
Obviously, only one side of the story, but given my experience with youth sports in HP, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least if this were true. “Adults” switching teams in the middle of the night, stealing players, hiding players, mother list goes on and on. Certainly not unique to the Park Cities, but disappointing nonetheless.
Nauseating to have the Park Cities People print something so blatantly one-sided. I guess they have never held themselves out as being “fair and balanced.” This does leave me wondering which team Dan was there to cheer for…..
I loved not having the annoying radio delay we had last year! Three cheers to getting that fixed!!!
Need more details…
I was there to cheer for the Scots, and we haven’t “printed” anything on this subject. I merely quoted a statement on my website that was already posted on another website. Maybe this seems like semantics to non-journalists, but we have higher standards for print stories than we do for blog posts. Rest assured that I’ll endeavor to get both sides of the story before one word about this appears in the newspaper.
So, did the game sound better on the radio than the result looked in the paper? Should HP be looking for a new coach? Do we need that freshman QB who moved in/out in the same week? Surely the Belles won the half-time show?
I was impressed by how enthusiastically the Aledo fans cheered for the Belles.
Belle families go to the other side to cheer for their girls when they face the opposing side. Was that the case? I used to give opponents tons of credit until I figured that out!!
We don’t need a new coach. Look at his record. Sometimes you just get outplayed. They will be competitive for district. Aledo has a great team.
@Sports Fan and Dan Koller, Opposition applause is not factored into the win/loss calculation. The Belles haven’t lost a half-time show in ever. In. Ever.
@ Nauseated HP Resident – I would also love to hear what the other side to this “one-sided” comment from the previous game broadcaster could be – if there was one that was even remotely justifiable.
I’m not one bit surprised to hear that someone was screwed over by HP parents. Just because someone lives in a better zip code or goes to the right church doesn’t mean they have any better morals than anyone else.
I am hoping that someone can let me know which radio station will be broadcasting Scots football games from now on. I live in Austin and had the same experience last Saturday night of hearing country music on 1190 AM. The radio listings for tonight’s high school football games posted by the Dallas Morning News still has 1190 for the Scots game and 100.7 as broadcasting the Midland Lee/Southlake game.
Try 660 am
Thanks! I missed seeing this post in time to catch the Scots game last Friday, but I am looking forward to checking out 660 AM for the game this evening. I see that even the Dallas Morning News now has 660 AM listed for the Socts game.
GO SCOTS!
