UP Mosquito Tests Positive For West Nile

A mosquito taken from the University Park fire department courtyard tested positive for the West Nile virus. The city has already fogged the courtyard area in response, and will re-treat Goar Park and Williams Park tonight.

Employees with the city got an email notifying them of the test results, and the city is continuing its “Fight the Bite” initiative that began in March. That plan includes systematic ground spraying for streets, alleys, parks, and streets on the SMU campus. It also includes property inspections, advice on mosquito control, and free mosquito dunks for residents. If you want to know more, go to the city’s website here.

I think we should feel lucky that only one West Nile-positive mosquito arose from that stagnant swamp next to the bridge.

    Neal,

The city has spent alot (small fortune) of money on the fountain (stays broke alot) so that the “swamp” won’t be stagnant.

Maybe the city should ask for a refund. Stagnant water seems to collect at the base of the old retaining wall behind the police station. Lots of crud floating on top, too. It takes me back to my childhood when I was told that even touching Turtle Creek water meant instant death.

I’m still surprised over the childrens water fountain bowl in Abbott Park loaded with mosquito larvae. How hard was it for HP to spot that? How many little kids sipped from that unfortunate situation?

Sleeping at the wheel. How difficult is it to stop the town vehicle and look around a little.
