When Surf Set exhibited its simulated surfing machine on ABC’s Shark Tank last fall, Dallas billionaire Mark Cuban bought in. Six months later, a group of local entrepreneurs brought the same technology to the concrete jungle of Uptown through City Surf Fitness.

“People love the idea because it’s so taboo to go surfing in a landlocked city,” said Highland Park graduate Lauren McHenry, one of City Surf’s toned teachers. “We are giving customers the opportunity to do something they wouldn’t normally be able to do, and it’s also beneficial for their health.”

City Surf offers five distinct classes for landlubbers and surf experts alike that incorporate surfing elements, intense cardio, and yoga into a full-body workout. The intimate studio features nine Surf Set boards angled toward the teacher. A montage of surfing videos and perfect beach bodies provides some inspiration for class participants.

Tyler Marshall, who teaches surfing at Lake Grapevine and Lake Lewisville, considers City Surf’s classes “a great workout that can be comparable to actual surfing because the class concentrates on the particular muscles that you would use while surfing as well as balance and coordination.” Marshall takes the class “to train in the offseason or before I travel to go surfing.”

Surfing novice Kirby Cohen thought the City Surf class was “a fun experience and a nice way to change up my exercise routine of running on the trail, though I’m not sure if I would pay for a package of classes.”

As of now, City Surf Fitness is the only Dallas locale where you can let out a “cowabunga, dude!” and try Surf Set’s patent-pending technology.

“This is beach-body season, and this is your beach-body workout,” said City Surf spokesman Hunter Heres, a graduate of Jesuit. “It’s a fast way to get fit.”
