Highlights From The HPHS Senior Awards

Fellow reporter Georgia Fisher and I cruised over to HPHS this morning to watch the Senior Honors Day Awards. Here’s a recap of some of the most notable moments.

  • There are 475 students in the class of 2013. They were awarded $12.8 million worth of scholarships – WOW!
  • Nan Porter and Will Scott, future West Point cadets, received a standing ovation when they were called to the stage.
  • The winner of the HP Servant Leadership award, Drew Alleman, volunteered for 1,504 service hours in his four years at Highland Park. Broken down, that’s 1.06 hours a day, every day, for four years.
  • Daniel Sutterfield, son of girls cross country coach Jerry Sutterfield, received the Linda Groseclose Scholarship.
  • Julia Waits accepted the Drama Award to a crowd full of whistles.
  • Arya McCarthy, who is a National Merit winner, is the valedictorian of the 2013 class. He’ll be attending SMU in the fall to study computer science and applied mathematics.
  • The salutatorian is Ellie Reynolds, who is also a National Merit winner. She will be attending Vanderbilt University in the fall.
  • Following with last year’s trend, the Blanket Award winners are both going to the same college: University of Texas. Kathryn Stouffer is in the Plan II program and wants to study nutrition. Will Vanderstraaten will be attending the business school. Hook ’em!

From all of us at Park Cities People, congrats! Check out our June 7 issue for profiles on Ellie, Arya, Kathryn, and Will.
