Knives Found Outside Highland Park High School

About an hour ago, Highland Park ISD Superintendent Dawson Orr sent a letter that said two knives were found outside Highland Park High School today, “concealed under a jacket on the ground.” Orr’s letter says the knives were never inside the school, and it says police have interviewed a student who tried to retrieve the knives after security guards found them.

After the jump, I’ve pasted Orr’s letter in its entirety:

Dear HPISD Parents and Staff,

We want to let you know about an incident that occurred this morning at Highland Park High School.

According to the University Park Police Department, two knives were concealed under a jacket on the ground near the stadium. Police say the knives were believed to be related to vandalism that occurred off campus over the weekend, and they were never brought into the school building.

Security guards noticed the jacket, found the knives, and when a student attempted to retrieve the jacket, the security guards approached the student and escorted the student to campus to be interviewed by police and high school administrators.

We wanted to let you know about this incident in light of Friday’s tragic event in Connecticut. Appropriate disciplinary measures are being taken on campus and the district is fully cooperating with police.

Student safety is absolutely a top priority in HPISD, and we appreciate the vigilance of our security officials and police in working with school officials on this matter.

HPISD and each of its campuses have well-established emergency plans in place, and we conduct drills throughout the school year. In addition, we have been in touch with our local law enforcement agencies to get their feedback and recommendations for security enhancements at all of our schools. This combined effort includes a review of our policies and procedures regarding campus security. We will keep you updated on these cooperative efforts to keep our students and staff safe.

We are blessed to have so many parent and community volunteers on our campuses, and we ask that you join us in actively monitoring and reporting anything unusual that you may see on or near our campuses.
