Highland Park senior center William Barns (6-3, 270) has verbally committed to play for SMU. Verbal commitments are non-binding. The first day recruits can sign is Feb. 6, 2013.

“I’m real excited,” Barns said. “I’m still trying to take it all in. It’s real weird knowing where I’m going to end up next year. Just I’ll be close to home and my family and people I know can come watch me. That was definitely a big plus for me.”

Barns’ dad, John, was a Parade All-American offensive lineman for the Scots who went on to play for Stanford. William Barns will be carrying on a tradition of Highland Park players moving on to play for the Mustangs. Currently, Blake Poston is on the SMU roster. And Kelly Turner, also a center, finished his career as a three-year starter last for the Mustangs last season.

Barns also had offers from Iowa State and San Diego State, but said SMU was his top choice.

The Scots (8-1, 6-0) wrap up the regular season at home against Terrell at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Highland Park’s offensive line is having a tremendous season, helping the Scots average 196.6 yards per game.
