Annual Bevo Appearance, Party Cancelled
So a woman called our offices this morning trying to find out where she can see the beloved University of Texas mascot, Bevo. I dug through our blog and found Brenda Sandoz, a real estate agent who has annually hosted the event at her University Park home. This afternoon would be her seventh consecutive pre-game party for the Red River Shootout.
But when I called her for a time slot, I learned a horrible truth. Bevo wasn’t going to be there.
After six years of hosting the Texas Longhorn mascot for the Park Cities, a man she had never dealt with until last year revoked the bovine’s appearance.
Sandoz said a man who claimed to be a coordinator told her last year that she had not gone through the proper channels to booking Bevo.
She has always gone directly to the Silver Spurs, UT’s Bevo handlers, as her son’s friend was the handler who helped her start the tradition six years ago. The coordinator tried to cancel it last year, and, much to what Sandoz expected, he came back at her again this year.
“He claimed that Bevo was never going to be promised to someone two years in a row,” Sandoz said.
Over the past six-consecutive years, Sandoz said there has never been an issue with her time slot.
She was told that Bevo was promised to the university for a showing, but because of her connection with the school, she said her event getting bumped by them wasn’t a likely excuse.
“I’m too involved with the school,” she said. “They would never bump someone else.”
Sandoz said for years she would send out email blasts to the community and, after about the third year, every one was accustomed to the party. She figured everyone knew that the mascot wasn’t going to make it this year, but as gameday approached, she was inundated with phone calls about party details.
Sadly, this year’s email blast she sent to the community, was about why the bull wouldn’t be appearing.
Sandoz was teased that she could have him next year and, while you won’t get to see Bevo in the intimate lawn setting, the longhorn will be at The University Co-op between noon and 1 p.m.
He was downtown I believe….
Oops! Never mind- I see where he was above.
I really appreciate Sandoz doing this for the Caruth Hills community. This is a wonderful event and I am sorry that it did not work out this year but will hope that everything can be fixed for next year (and I include the game outcome here as well). A wonderful time to meet new neighbors and to visit with old friends in casual fun festive way!
