Who Needs Gluten?
Last week, when my gluten-free cousin came to visit, I was put up to the challenge of finding tasty restaurants nearby that offered gluten-free options. Gluten-free means more than just passing up bread; gluten hides in soy sauce, many salad dressings, and beer. So I was looking for menus that offer entirely gluten-free dishes. Here is my list of great gluten-free options inside (and a little outside) of Preston Hollow.
In Our Hollow
Mi Cocina – The gluten-free menu boasts dishes such as fajitas, eggs, veggies, tacos, and salads.
P.F. Chang’s China Bistro — Choose from a variety of meats, veggies, stir-fries, noodles, and desserts, such as the flourless chocolate dome and the triple-chocolate mousse from their gluten-free menu. Gluten-free soy sauce is also available.
Penne Pomodoro — No gluten free menu, but for an extra 75 cents you can choose Italian gluten-free pasta or, for $1 more, you can eat your pizza on gluten-free dough.
Zoës Kitchen — Their gluten-free menu includes a hummus plate, chicken kabobs, and a variety of salads and sides.
Minutes From The Hollow
Asian Mint — No individual gluten-free menu, but every bolded item on their regular menu (about half) can be made gluten-free. Options include summer rolls, spicy soups, salads, stir fry chicken, pad thai, and curry.
Fireside Pies — Order any pizza with gluten-free crust.
Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant — Start with their housemade chips (but ask for no bleu cheese sauce). Then choose from entrees like the bone-in ribeye or grilled sea bass. Sides range from coleslaw and mushrooms to jasmine rice and garlic mashed potatoes.
Sprinkles Cupcakes — While the bakery offers only one gluten-free flavor, red velvet, the heavenly cream cheese icing makes the $3.50 worth it.
Twisted Root Burger Company — Order your burger on a gluten-free bun and add a side of their famous sweet potato chips.
Tu-Lu’s Gluten-Free Bakery — They offer a variety of cakes, cupcakes, muffins, and cookies. Also try treats such as peanut butter toffee blondies, cinnamon sugar doughnuts, granola, sunflower bread, cookie cakes, and paninis.
