Highland Park Armed Robber Caught in Mesquite
Apolonio J. Cuevas, 18, of Mesquite was arrested early Monday morning as the suspect in connection with the armed robbery of a Highland Park man on June 18.
Cuevas was identified as the gunman who robbed a 55-year-old man walking on Hillcrest Avenue near Dartmouth Avenue.
The victim told HP police the suspect exited a tan minivan with some exterior body damage just prior to the offense. He said he saw the same van at one point earlier on his walk.
Sgt. Lance Koppa, a spokesman for Highland Park’s Department of Public Safety, said in a Monday morning press release that HP investigators worked quickly to get information from the victim and received a tip the day after the incident that lead them on the path to Cuevas.
“Once we identified the extra witnesses the pieces fell into place. We take what information we have and work backwards toward the source, in this case our suspect,” stated Detective C. Justice in the press release.
There were no armed robberies in Highland Park in all of 2011 and this was the first of 2012.
There have been no connection made publicly about another armed robbery reported by the Dallas Observer that happened in Uptown near the same time with similar characteristics, such as the tan van.
