J. Peyton Dewey Jr., affectionately known as “Pete” to his many friends, passed away at his Dallas home on June 10, 2012.  Pete was the son of J. Peyton Dewey Sr. and Anne Dewey, who predeceased him.  His sister, Anne Dewey Guerin of Austin, also predeceased him.  Pete is survived by his cousins, Pam and Larry James of Albuquerque, N.M.

Pete was born in Dallas, Texas, on Jan. 25, 1924 and graduated from Highland Park High School.  He briefly attended the University of Texas, but then enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a lieutenant overseas. 

After World War II, Pete went briefly to Yale University, and finally graduated from Southern Methodist University.

Pete went into the outdoor advertising business with his father under the name of Dewey Advertising and had various real estate investments.  Pete was active in restoring historic properties, including the Queen Isabella Inn in Port Isabel, Texas, which the Dewey family owned and operated in the late 1950s.

Pete was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, the Dallas Ski Club, and the Dallas Tennis Association.  He was a longtime patron of the Dallas Symphony and a host of other civic and cultural organizations.

A memorial service for J. Peyton Dewey Jr. was held in the Chapel of the Church of the Incarnation, 3966 McKinney Ave., Dallas, Texas, on Friday, June 15, 2012 with a reception following.  In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the educational, civic, or cultural charity of your choice.
