Former Highland Park outfielder Mark Gottsacker has earned a preferred walk-on spot with the University of Texas baseball team.

Gottsacker, who was the District 10-4A Offensive Most Valuable Player this past season after hitting .406 with 18 RBI and 15 stolen bases, had already been accepted to Texas before receiving the invite to play for the Longhorns.

“I’m extremely excited,” Gottsacker said. “I had offers from other places, but I didn’t want to go somewhere and sacrifice an education for baseball. I planned on going to Texas for quite a while. Probably about a month-and-a-half before our season ended, we got in contact with them. And it just kind of went from there.”

Gottsacker, who was also a football standout for the Scots, took a visit to Austin to meet head coach Augie Garrido and the team around the same time Highland Park’s girls soccer team won the state tournament in April.

“It happened real fast and real late,” Gottsacker said. “It worked our perfectly.”
