Memorial Event on Katy Trail Gets More Patrols

On Memorial Day, those supporting the event Carry The Load — a 20-hour walk honoring members of the military, law enforcement, firefighers and their families for the sacrifices they make — will receive extra security in light of recent robberies on the Katy Trail.

This string of robberies found a suspect late May 19, and has since been a hot topic for trail runners.

Highland Park DPS wants people to know that the lights on the trail turn off at 11:00 p.m. and there are location markers posted every 1/8 mile as a reference if you need to call 911 for emergency assistance.

Here is the letter from HPDPS:

From the Office of Community Relations:

The Katy Trail is normally busy every weekend when the weather is nice and…not too hot. This Memorial Day weekend will have additional walkers/runners between Sunday at 3:00 p.m. through Monday at 3:00 p.m. that are participating in the event “Carry The Load”. The lights on the Katy Trail will remain on all night Sunday for the event. For additional information visit www.carrytheload.org/dallas. I plan on visiting the trail Sunday evening to show support for those that plan to make the 20-plus hour trek.

I know there has been much attention given to the Katy Trail with the recent robberies. Dallas PD is providing additional patrol officers both on the trail and surrounding areas. Although one mile of the trail borders Highland Park, the entire length of the Katy Trail is a city park in Dallas. The lights on the trail turn off at 11:00 p.m. There are location markers posted every 1/8 mile as a reference if you need to call 911 for emergency assistance. If you are a runner, walker, cyclist, or use rollerblades, pay attention to your surroundings. If something looks suspicious, call 911 immediately. Prior to the recent criminal activity, the last offense on the Katy Trail was in March 2011.

One of our officers arrested a burglary (vehicle) suspect two nights ago from an offenses that originated on 4500 Bordeaux and 4500 Belfort Ave. Later in the morning an uninvolved resident located some property from one of the offenses that was adjacent to her house. This property had been intentionally left behind by the suspect and our investigators tied the property to the burglary offense. An additional Burglary of a Motor Vehicle charge was added once the detectives completed their investigation. Remember to call us, 214.521.5000, or 911, to report any suspicious or unusual activity.

thank you,

Sgt. Lance Koppa

Carry the Load was founded by a former Navy SEAL and there will be a number of former SEALs participating in the event. Fair warning to any scoundrel contemplating thievery on the Katy Trail Sunday night into Monday.
