You Weren’t The Only Person Freaked Out Last Night
Like Dan mentioned a bit ago, last night’s Dallas Country Club fireworks were a surprise to some. I’ve got a call out to Highland Park DPS to see how many calls the town took in regarding the ‘works, but while I waited I called Steve Mace in University Park as well.
His response, via e-mail:
I checked with dispatch. They did not log any calls related to fireworks. About 9 p.m. they did take a call from a resident on San Carlos complaining about loud music coming from the Dallas Country Club. As I mentioned, I talked with a resident on Colgate this morning. She was frightened by the noise (fireworks). She asked that I forward her concerns to the Town and the Country Club.
I’ll update accordingly, but here’s a question: what should the Club have done? Sent out a flier? Called everyone? Nothing? I’m curious.
Some kind of notice would have been nice. Even just a sign on Mockingbird a week in advance letting those driving by know that fireworks are imminent (tacky I know, but still).
I almost called about the loud music but didn’t realize it was coming from the DCC. It sounded like a neighbor with really bad taste in music was blaring a boombox. Google maps tells me I live almost 1/2 mile from the club. That music must have been blaring.
Glad to know the Taj Mahal is finished and we won’t have to endure that for another 50-60 years (other than Biffy’s Sweet Sixteen, I guess). But since the new club apparently has much more room for outdoor parties is this going to be a more regular occurrence?
Fireworks on a Friday or Saturday night? No big deal.
Fireworks on a Wednesday night at 10 p.m.? Some type of notice would’ve been appreciated.
I also live about a half mile from DCC, and while I could hear some faint music and post-fireworks cheering, it wasn’t any louder than an SMU football game from the same distance. Yes, the fireworks were a little jarring at first (I thought a tree had fallen on the house) but I just went outside and enjoyed them. Problem solved. It wasn’t a big deal, although I’m sure some of our more tightly wound neighbors with nothing better to do will fire up the outrage bus as usual.
Steve, I called the non-emergency UP police number while the fireworks were going off, and the number was busy! I dialed it about 6 times, then decided that others must be calling so I stopped. I cannot understand how this could have been approved. 9:30 on July 4, yes; 10 pm in April, no.
Earlier, right at sundown, would have been better than 10pm.
Tightly wound, indeed. Y’all lighten up.
Parkie, you should have called HP, both mayors where there, maybe Mr Mace can check with them.
After about 10 minutes, my wife and I deduced that it must be fireworks related to some event at the country club. But we were scratching our heads for a while. First, trying to determine what the loud booms were, and then why someone would have a fireworks show on a Wednesday night in April.
Just curious, why didn’t DCC wait until the weekend to have the celebration? We don’t have kids, but I would imagine that the fireworks could have disrupted many kids in the neighborhood sleep. Keep in mind, this was after 10 p.m. when the fireworks show was at its crescendo.
I called the UP non-emergency number, too, and it was constantly busy. We live almost to Northwest Hwy. and it was extremely loud and echoing. A lot of neighbors were outside trying to figure out what it was. I thought it was construction work at Preston Center and that they were blowing up something. I’ve heard DCC fireworks really close before and they were no where near as loud as they were Wed. night! Just a weird time and day of the week. I had several friends who live near HPV whose young kids and even middle schoolers woke up and were scared!
