SMU Pursuing Marquette’s Williams, Sources Say

SMU is trying to lure Texas native and Marquette head coach Buzz Williams to the Hilltop, sources told CBS Sports Saturday.

Williams lead the Golden Eagles to the Sweet 16 the past two years, and makes $2.6 million a year at the Big East school.

It would be a coup for SMU to hire such a successful coach to replace Matt Doherty, though it’s unclear what Williams’s interest is in the program.

No way this happens. He is already making $2.6mm, so it would take well over $3mm for him to come here. That wouldn’t sit well with June Jones if the basketball coach is making more. Not too mention, Marquette has had a lot of success, fan support, and good recruting in hoops. SMU…not so much.

The only possible attraction I can think of right now for the SMU hoops program is the move to the Big East. And Buzz is already in the Big East! It will be VERY tough to attract anyone of note to this job, so they’ll probably have no choice but to hire someone unproven and hope.

As expected, Buzz Williams is on record stating that he will not leave Marquette for SMU.

Larry Brown says he’s interested in the job, but SMU may not be interested in him.
