HPHS Science Team Takes Statewide Honor

The HPHS Science team — Preston Luthy, Jessica Yeh, Alex Levine and Arya McCarthy — poses with the TMSCA trophy.

The Highland Park High School Science Team took home first place at the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association state meet March 17 in San Antonio.  HP squads also took second  in mathematics, third in number sense, and earned the second place TMSCA State 4A Sweepstakes Award.

I don’t know the difference between “number sense” and “mathematics”, which is why I am in my chosen profession. Congrats, lady and gentlemen.

UILTexas.org says Number Sense is a mental math test where a contestant needs to use short cuts to finish the test. Math test probably requires pencil and paper calculations.

I was so bad at math that I was placed in a course called “Mathematics as a Human Endeavor”. That title always made me think that my school was saying to me, “You’re so stupid, all we’re going to do is ask you to try”. I tried and failed it anyway. To me there’s nothing human about math, pure torture all the way. Congratulations to the smart kids!

I’m with you, No Brainer. My freshman math class for the math challenged was called, “Consumer Math” e.g. balancing a checkbook (which I never did), finding the best deal on canned vegetables based on price per ounce (that one was helpful), and how to calculate the price when a shirt on the 40% off rack is marked down an additional 20% (very helpful). I’m so glad my kids take after their dad!

    Well done, team. Congratulations!

Number Sense is a 10 minute 80 question test. The test rewards quick AND accurate processors. Not all smart mathy kids are quick processors…or have accurate calculators for brains. You may not write down anything but the answer. No scratch throughs, no stray marks. The mathematics test is a 40-minute test with more involved problems. You may use calculator, scratch paper and write down calculations on that test.
