GCB: We’re Off to an Inauspicious Start
Laura has the full recap at FrontRow, but here’s a taste:
Cut to an oil rig! Show me some DFW Airport! I’d like a little Cotton Bowl, please! We get it all, including a nice little montage of Swiss Avenue…
Anyone watch it? I was instead burning my fingertips off, centimeter by centimeter, with a bucket of acid. It was much preferred.
Umm, not to be picky, but Carlene doesn’t own “Bootylicious.” It was Kitty.
It was pretty awful…I prefer the “Dallas” version of the city.
I saw a few minutes of the Midway event. “At least my husband knows to hold onto the steering wheel during orgasim.” I may have to shorten my prediction of one complete season.
I loved “GCB”!!
I loved the “Hillside Park” reference to Highland Park, and the “Longhorn Ball” as a nod to the Cattle Baron’s Ball.
Amanda’s mother (Gigi; played by Annie Potts) almost steals the show.
How could you not love her quippy lines? — such as “Who moves from Dallas to Southern California. We have the same weather, without the liberals!”, or “Why would I have (internet)? I don’t watch porn….”
“GCB” isn’t meant to be some kind of serious, deep documentary or analysis about life in the Park Cities. And although people seem to want to make comparisons to “Desperate Housewives,” I don’t think it was intended to be a carbon copy of that show either.
I think that everyone can kind of relate to this show, even if they’re not from the Park Cities. I think everyone knows someone who reminds them of a “Carlene,” or “Cricket” or “Heather”, etc..
And the closeted gay husband? Who’s married but has a secret “guy friend” on the side? It’s more common that you might think. If I had a nickel for every time I’ve….
To be fair, the pilot episode had shortcomings. But it also had a lot of ground to cover. It had to show Amanda in California, her moving back to Dallas, and it had to introduce all of the main characters. Hopefully, future episodes will allow for more time to develop the characters and their story-lines.
I loved seeing familiar locations in Dallas during last night’s episode. It’s a shame that all future episodes will primarily be filmed in Los Angeles. I suspect they’re doing that to hold down costs, and because the actors on the show probably prefer to live closer to their families in L.A.
The men on “GCB” (David James Elliott, Mark Deklin and Brad Beyer) are handsome. The guy who played Amanda’s Ponzi-scheming husband was hot too. They sure picked some eye candy for the ladies and gay guys who watch this show!
I can’t wait for next week’s episode!!
That is 1 hour of my life I’ll never get back. Vapid. Cliche. Insulting. Shallow. Plain stupid. Pick an adjective you like, but do not use the word “entertainment”. We don’t need the stereotype. I’m thinking this dies a quiet death after a few episodes. Good riddance.
@ Amanda – Carlene = Kitten
GCB means Good Christian Bitches
What have we come too?
We are neither good nor followers of Christ.
A camel stuck in the eye of the needle, needlessly exploiting people
The time will come to pay the Gabriel piper
If we do not shed our foolish materialistic & consumeristic ways
As soon as they had Annie Potts say “The I-20” I almost had to turn it off. I know I shouldn’t be a stickler for any kind of reality, but NO ONE in Texas describes highways as “THE _____” like they do in LA.
I love Kristen Chenoweth and Annie Potts, but I don’t think I can take an hour of this every week. It should be a 30 minute comedy.
Of course no one in the 75205 is going to admit any of this is true-to-life. I actually loved the show. It’s only meant as humor. Everyone in Park Cities thinks it’s a documentary. This place is crawling with GCB’s. I’m still glad I was sent away to school as apposed to HPHS. Or I would be just like them.
I agree with Scooter!! Very Park Cities!!!
Made me laugh, in spite of “The I-20.” It’s a spoof of characters who are pretty universal. We just have a greater concentration of them.
@Scooter. Most of the current HPHS students will be nothing like these men and women. They’re smart, nice, not shallow.
@ HP Parent- Thanks! You probably took better notes than me in high school. I didn’t record, so I only had the first impression…I think the show could be really funny.
Major snaps to Kim Gatlin… Publish your own book, option the rights…I hope she is laughing all the way to the spa.
