UP Community League Endorses Council Candidates

The University Park Community League announced its endorsements for mayor and council today, with few surprises:

– Mayor: Dick Davis

– Councilmembers: Tommy Stewart, Bob Begert, Bob Clark (incumbents), and Dawn Moore.

“We’re very pleased that these experienced and active University Park residents will run for elected office to serve the citizens of University Park,” said Fred Hamm, chairman of the Community League. “The quality of these candidates reflects the depth of leadership available to serve in our great community. These highly qualified candidates with substantial records of city government and civic involvement should do a great job for our community upon their election.”

Dawn Moore is the lone newbie. She currently sits on the city’s planning and zoning committee, and has previously served on its legislative committee. For more about Moore, here’s her personal blog.

Councilman Jerry Grable is stepping down due to term limits, city spokesman Steve Mace said.

Wow, what a shocker. Here are some alternative names that they should consider, so that people won’t get confused by their bland name: “The Old Guard”, “The No Change Ever Party”, the “What was good for my daddy is good for UP” Party, etc…

So time to suggest some new names. Start with former Citizens of the Year Max Fuqua and Chris Murzin.

UP voters are not stupid. Each cycle the citizens continue to vote for the league’s slate because their candidates have spent time serving on the various citizen committees and have a proven track record of leadership. Voters could have chosen one of the 3 candidates off the slate last time around, but they didn’t. If you have a problem with that then you have a problem with democratic elections in general.

Does this mean the Huddletons will finally be able to put up that new building on the Chase site? *cough*

The Community League. The same group that spent millions spreading lies trying to stop the passage of the alcohol resolutions. Let’s hope that was the beginning of a losing streak. Oh how nice it would be for someone like Max to run.

Can someone please explain the history of the UP Community League? Does HP have a “Community League”? When did this group form? What is it exactly that they do here? Is this an elected group? Who formed this group? How is it funded? The only knowledge I have of this group is what UPDad mentioned; that they lied their pants off to try and scare people away from the alcohol resolution.

I wouldn’t vote Fuqua for dog catcher. Health food store hippi, rabble rouser, probably a card carrying communist.

I would like to see a woman on the council – it should be required !!!!
Changes can only happen one small step at a time –
I understand there is a lot to be considered in the process – I would like to see a city council that embraces a positive attitude in allowing the city of UP to move with the times – or in some cases go back to strong old fashioned family values !
I would like to see back yard hens brought back into our city !!!
Currently we have 2 council members who voted to allow hens – we need one more to move into this camp !!!
I am hopeful this will come with a womans touch !!!!

“…it should be required!!!!!” to have a woman on the council. Now there’s someone who really understands freedom and the American way. I think it should be required to have four average white boys up there. Plus one chicken.

The chicken would cast the deciding vote in case of a tie.

The last council before the current one had a woman on it, and she directly lied to my face on two different occasions. I don’t care if they are male or female, but the rubber-stamps from the Community League are just a facade for what the richest of the rich want. They do exactly as they are told by the League so that they can eventually have a park named after them.

Just for the record, the Community League did not oppose the Beer and Wine election. They never said one word about it either way. They also did not spend any money on the opposition’s campaign. The folks I talked with who are members of the League basically just wanted to leave the issue up to the voters.
