I didn’t realize we had changed our name to “Dallas Highland Park”. Was that a memo or did I miss the vote on that?

James, I’ve seen that designation before. If anything, the name should be “University Park Highland Park,” since the high school is in UP.

Lots of high schools get that treatment in statewide lists. Everyone in HP calls schools like that, too. Tyler John Tyler, Midland Lee, Odessa Permian, Fort Worth Dunbar, Southlake Carroll, Euless Trinity. People in those schools never add the first part because it’s not really part of the school name, just a description for folks who are unfamiliar with the schools.

P.S. What a lame district. Zero rivalries or traditions. Bummer.

Wow. Time to fill up the tank, pack a snack and plug in the GPS.
The Forneys’ and Terrell certainly make it a longer day for the athletes and band members etc.
Also, those schools are gonna hate us.

Who? That’s the one bad thing about Texas football (ducking to miss lightning bolt), changing league makeups every 2 years. I mean, what in the heck is a Forney?

@James Tucker. I think the Dallas HPISD is to distinguish the district from the Highland Park ISD in Amarillo, Texas. Yes, there is another one.

@Pigskinnie – I couldn’t agree more with you comment about this being a lame district. I was hoping for the proposed alignment that included Lovejoy, Wylie Schools and Prosper. No real competition in most sports except perhaps from Poteet in FB and Baseball. Once again, HP will march through district play w/o being challenged and struggle once they get into the playoffs. In FB, let’s hope they schedule some ranked opponents for non-district. One positive note, the girls VB team won’t have to deal with Pearce and Heath anymore, maybe they can win a district title again.

It has never made any sense to me how HP is never placed in a district with other Dallas schools that are MUCH closer in proximity than schools like Terrrell, Forney, or any of the above. I assume it has to do with politicking by HPISD to avoid being put in a district with majority minority schools.

Did Pearce and Heath get moved up to 5A as expected?

I’m agreeing with lameness. I have enjoyed the rivalries with the likes of Pearce and Heath. As for our designation as Dallas Highland Park, when they talk about Tyler John Tyler, Midland Lee, Arlington Martin or Southlake Carroll those schools are in those cities. We aren’t in Dallas. Like Dan said University Park Highland Park is more accurate although I think we can stand alone without a descriptor.

Dallas is the official mailing address for the school.

The HPISD email regarding this said the district was for basketball and football.

Isn’t this district for all UIL sports and academic competitions? Do track and volleyball and debate and everything else not matter to our district? Don’t those competitions earn us points as well?

HPISD could have at least said it was “for all UIL activities, including basketball and football.”

Unless the name of the high school is the same name of the city it is in, the UIL puts the city name in front of every high school in Texas to identify them (Dallas Highland Park, Frisco Liberty, Carrollton Creekview, etc.). It’s based on mailing address city.

@gringobling – why do you perpetuate the misconception that HP “politicks” the district alignment? The UIL uses a number of factors in assigningIn looking at the new alignment, you could consider W. Mesquite and possibly even Poteet minority schools, i.e. their enrollment is more than 50% non-white. The majority of the “minority” schools close to HP are in DISD and the UIL tries to keep schools from the same district together. While I’d love to see HP play Hillcrest, Woodrow and Lincoln every year, it’s not going to happen anytime soon.

Why is Lake Highlands 4A? They have lower enrollment than HPHS

Lake Highlands is 5A. I haven’t seen the new enrollment numbers for this realignment specific to the schools, but last realignment was 2,281 for Lake Highlands and 1,903 for Highland Park.

DemBones, this new alignment is not for all sports and activities. While I can’t speak specifically for all other sports or activities, I do know that soccer usually has a different district and their new district is announced in March or April.

Most sports have the same district. Soccer is different though, I’m not sure why, but they play a couple of the same schools as the other sports do, like Pearce (although I have no idea how their district changes for next year.
