Disgraced Yale QB Spent Time at Highland Park

Last night, I spent some time reading this New York Times article about Patrick Witt, the former Rhodes Scholarship finalist/ Yale quarterback turned alleged sexual assailant.

I was somehow distracted and didn’t finish the article, which led me to miss the fact that he spent a few weeks at Highland Park before transferring to Wylie. Tim did read the whole article, and mentioned it this morning on FrontBurner.

A really well-reported story, and sad for lots of reasons. Worth your time.

Bradford, for you to call him “disgraced” and suggest this was a “really well-reported story” is laughable. Frankly, I can’t believe the NYT went to print with this one. Read the story again. An accuser who remains nameless and they haven’t even identified. No charges have been filed. No police investigation undertaken. No comment from the University or Rhodes Scholarship Committee. The rest is just filler with irrelevant facts. While there’s smoke and there could be fire, the facts aren’t there yet. Calling him “disgraced” at this juncture is too early and better should be expected of you as a journalist.

By the way, I remember well when he transferred to HP and abruptly left when he wasn’t able to just step right into the starter’s role. The idea of moving to Texas and renting a condo just to play football at HP didn’t sit well with me then and I was encouraged by Coach Allen’s refusal to plug him into the starter’s role.

@Disgraced- Maybe I was a little over the top, but I too was happy when I read Allen refused to play him immediately.

He moved here from Georgia and his parents did extensive research as to which high schools had best program from a FB perspective AND did not have a strong incumbent underclass QB on the roster. Since his father was an Airline pilot, he could pretty much live anywhere. He was rated #3 QB on the HP depth chart after spring practice in 2007 so his parents moved to Wylie where he could start. He went on to Nebraska, but didn’t win starting role there either so he transferred to Yale, notice a pattern here?
The most disturbing thing about the whole situation is the fact that Witt made it sound like he had a “decision” to make regarding going to Rhodes interview or playing in Yale-Harvard FB game. According to the NYT article, his interview was cancelled when the allegations where brought to the attention of the committee. While I agree that an investigation into the allegations should have occurred, the fact that it even surfaced is enough to bring in to question Witt’s integrity. I hope there is a follow-up on this.

BP – why would you even write about this? Do you just want to dig for a smidgen of dirt ? It’s not our story. Saying he has a relationship with HP means nothing.

As a former HP footballer, I actually have no problem with the dad trying to find the best situation for his son. A degree from Yale will beat that of most of the critics…
