JUNIOR LEAGUE OF DALLAS AWARDS 83
GRANTS FOR INNOVATIVE TEACHING TO DALLAS ISD TEACHERSMore than $112K in grants will benefit students at 45 Dallas ISD schools this year
DALLAS—The Junior League of Dallas (JLD) recently awarded 83 Grants for Innovative Teaching totaling more than $112,000 to teachers at 45 schools within the Dallas Independent School District. These grants will support unique and groundbreaking projects addressing literacy and reading enrichment, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), and arts and cultural enrichment at all grade levels throughout Dallas ISD.
“It is an honor to award JLD Grants for Innovative Teaching to more than 90 teachers within Dallas ISD,” said Susan Wells, president of JLD. “These teachers have demonstrated a commitment to educating our kids in innovative and inspiring ways. GFIT awards are truly an investment in the future of Dallas.”
GFIT award recipients for the 2011-2012 school year encompass all levels of education within Dallas ISD. Some shining examples of the education initiatives the grants support include:
Elementary School: Sixty-two grants were funded at 32 different schools, including:
· Harry Stone Montessori Academy: GFIT grant will help introduce students to Latin and Mandarin Chinese.
· Seagoville Elementary School: Grant will allow the school’s “Wee Dragon Reporters” a chance to become journalists and have their articles published in the local newspaper.
Middle School: Six grants were given at four different middle schools, providing students with opportunities like these:
· Robert T. Hill Middle School: Grant will allow the school to hire professional musicians from the Dallas Wind Symphony to come to the campus and teach master classes.
· William Hawley Atwell Law Academy: GFIT grant will bring digital microscopes in the classroom to help students gain an understanding of cells, DNA and other biological organisms found in our world.
High School: This year, 15 grants were awarded to 9 high school campuses supporting activities that include:
· W.T. White High School: Students will have the chance to see biology in action as they hatch eggs, grow tadpoles and transform caterpillars.
· Moisés E. Molina High School: GFIT grant will give students the opportunity to delve into the culture of Japan by creating murals, Haiku poetry, Raku glazes, origami and bookbinding.
“We are extremely proud of our teachers who received Grants for Innovative Teaching, and are thankful for the Junior League of Dallas’ continued commitment to support our schools,” said Dallas ISD Interim Superintendent of Schools Alan King. “We look forward to our teachers doing great things in the classroom with these grant programs.”
Each year, the JLD GFIT program awards grants of up to $1500 to Dallas ISD teachers to fund innovative projects not provided for in school budgets. Since 1992, JLD has distributed more than $1,000,000 to Dallas ISD teachers. To apply, grant recipients must articulate how the projects will challenge students and improve student achievement. JLD also provides each teacher with a liaison who works with that teacher over the period of the grant, monitoring the project and helping to assess its effectiveness.
The JLD Grants for Innovative Teaching were presented to the teachers and principals at an awards ceremony held on September 20, 2011 at the Meadows Museum at Southern Methodist University.
