Kershaw Pitches Inning in All-Star Game

Former Highland Park standout Clayton Kershaw pitched one scoreless inning in last night’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game, helping the National League beat the American League, 5-1, and claim home-field advantage in the World Series.

Kershaw, who was making his first All-Star appearance, needed just eight pitches to get three outs in the fifth inning. He struck out Boston’s David Ortiz and also got New York’s Robinson Cano and Detroit’s Alex Avila to ground out.

Despite the struggles of his team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Kershaw is having a stellar season with a 9-4 record, a 3.03 ERA, and 147 strikeouts. Kershaw is scheduled to start tomorrow night at Arizona.

It is always nice to see great kids from HP go on to be role models. Says a lot when the ace pitcher for the Dodgers goes on a mission trip to Africa for his honeymoon.

Is it true he is only making $500,000 this year? Nolan, get this kid back to Texas.

@Really- Yes, that’s true, but any time someone is making $500k for throwing a baseball I cringe when the word “only” is thrown around. The salary is (comparably) low because he isn’t eligible for arbitration yet. I expect his next contract to be much, much larger.

@Really. Did you see what his original signing bonus was? He’s not hurting.

Yeah, Kershaw got paid a $21 million signing bonus by the Dodgers the summer after he graduated HPHS.
